ORIANA CRUTCHER

Focusing on the horror film character archetype of the 'Whore,' I imagine how my contemporary Black, queer, cultural background and style would be represented in a genre where I've hardly ever been depicted. All the while, I confront the over-sexualization of women in the genre and create a space where the side character becomes the main character. By using variations of red, I exaggerate the hyper-feminine qualities to emphasize the characters that viewers lust after, such as Jennifer Check, Ginger Fitzgerald, and Tiffany Valentine. Hence the title 'Whorer'—I place these women in horrible situations. They are not your typical final girls; my characters are doomed.
